Dates and Celebrations of Major Religions June 5 Bahá'i: Núr (Light), the fifth month of the Bahá'i year Christian: Ascension (E) is the anniversary of Jesus' ascension into heaven and enthronement as universal sovereign. June 9-10 Judaism: Shavuot (Weeks; the plural of the Hebrew word for seven) marks the conclusion of the period of seven weeks that follows Pesah Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Israelites and the completion of God's work to create a special people. It is celebrated for two days in the diaspora and for one day in Israel among reform Jews. June 15 Christianity: Pentecost (E) is the commemoration of the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus following his ascension. June 16 Sikhism: Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji (1563-1606) Guru Arjan Dev Ji was the first Sikh Martyr and the fifth Guru. He built the Harimandir Sahib (Home of the Divine) in which Sikhs could meet to learn, in the town of Amritsar (Pool of Nectar). To emphasize that the Sikh way was open to all, regardless of caste, he constructed the Gurdwara with doors facing all four directions. Sikhs remember Guru Arjan Dev Ji for contributing to and compiling the Sikh Scriptures. June 22 Christianity: A day to honor Christian saints throughout the ages. June 24 Bahá'i: Rahmat (Mercy), the sixth month of the Bahá'i year. |
